Ukraine Appeal CEO Represents Our Community at the Royal Garden Party
On May 8, our CEO Viktoriya Shtanko had the honour of attending the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace — one of the most prestigious and historic events in the United Kingdom. Each year, over 30,000 guests are invited to spend an afternoon in the Palace gardens, meeting members of the Royal Family and celebrating people who have made a positive impact in their communities.
Invitations cannot be requested or applied for. Guests are nominated through a long‑established national network that includes Lord‑Lieutenants, government bodies, charities, faith groups, and community organisations. This ensures that those invited represent a true cross‑section of people who contribute to society in meaningful ways. Being selected is a rare honour — and a powerful recognition of service, leadership, and community impact.
This year’s event was especially meaningful as it took place on VE Day, a day that symbolises unity, sacrifice, freedom, and peace in Europe. These values resonate deeply with Ukrainians today, and Viktoriya was proud to represent our community at such an important moment.
Reflecting on the experience, she shared:
“It is very hard to express in words what one feels when receiving an invitation from Buckingham Palace — let alone keeping it a secret from friends for weeks! It is such a privilege and an unforgettable experience to attend the finest of events — The Royal Garden Party.”
She continued:
“Being there on VE Day made the occasion even more meaningful. As Ukrainians, we understand the price of peace and the importance of unity in Europe. I am deeply proud to have the opportunity to represent Ukraine in such a meaningful place.”
What happens at a Royal Garden Party? The Palace gates open in the afternoon, and the event officially begins when members of the Royal Family enter the gardens to the sound of the National Anthem. They walk through the grounds, meeting guests from all walks of life. Military bands perform throughout the afternoon, and guests are invited to enjoy tea, refreshments, and the beautiful surroundings of the Palace gardens.
For many, it is a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience — a moment of recognition for years of dedication, service, and community leadership.
For our charity, this invitation is more than a personal achievement — it is a recognition of the work our entire community has built together. The Royal Garden Party honours individuals who strengthen society, support others, and contribute to the well-being of their communities. Viktoriya’s presence there reflects the impact of our volunteers, our partners and supporters, our families and the wider Ukrainian community in Milton Keynes.
It acknowledges the resilience, unity, and cultural contribution Ukrainians bring to the UK.
Viktoriya shared:
“Today, we made a statement — hundreds of people approached us to speak about Ukraine. This is exactly the mission every Ukrainian abroad should carry forward: to remind the world about Ukraine and our people.”
Her participation ensured that Ukraine remained visible at one of the most symbolic gatherings in the country — a place where voices of service, leadership, and community are heard.
For Ukrainians in Milton Keynes and beyond, this moment shows that our story is recognised, our contribution is valued, and our presence matters.
We are incredibly proud of this recognition and grateful for the dedication, compassion, and leadership that Viktoriya brings to Ukraine Appeal every day. This honour belongs to our entire community — a testament to what we can achieve when we stand together.
