Vyshyvanka Runway Transforms Milton Keynes into a Living Artwork

On 16 May, the Ukrainian community of Milton Keynes filled the city centre with colour, pride, and cultural identity as they walked a symbolic runway in vyshyvankas. Members of the Ukrainian community — together with supporters of Ukraine — joined a vibrant procession through the city and posed on a red carpet surrounded by trees decorated in embroidered patterns.

This joyful celebration became a powerful reminder that Ukrainian culture lives wherever Ukrainians stand together.

“Vyshyvanka Runway: The Code of Identity” — A Living Street‑Art Installation

Created by Ukraine Appeal charity, Vyshyvanka Runway: The Code of Identity is a unique live street‑art installation that unites people through art, heritage, and human connection. The creative concept was developed by Viktoriya Shtanko and brought to life by more than 100 Ukrainian women and children displaced by war and now living in the UK.

What began as an aesthetic installation — 30 hand‑crafted textile tapestries representing all regions of Ukraine — grew into something much deeper. It became a shared cultural experience, a moment of unity, and a celebration of who we are. Yet the most powerful part of the installation was not the fabric — it was the people.

Through this living artwork, we created a modern Vyshyvanka of Milton Keynes — crafted from individuals, families, and a community that continues to grow, connect, and support one another.

A vyshyvanka is far more than traditional embroidered clothing. Each stitch carries symbols, ornaments, and hidden codes passed down through generations. For centuries, vyshyvanka has preserved: identity, memory, family traditions, regional heritage and spiritual protection.

Wearing it today — especially far from home — is an act of pride, unity, and connection to our roots.

🌍 Vyshyvanka Day Around the World

Today, Thursday 21 May, people across the globe wear vyshyvankas — Ukrainians to express identity and dedication to their native culture, and supporters of Ukraine to show solidarity and respect for a rich, ancient heritage.

Україна єднає наші серця. Ukraine unites our hearts.

Happy Vyshyvanka Day!
