Step inside a traditional Ukrainian home through an immersive installation exploring women’s heritage, handmade textiles and everyday family life preserved through generations of craft and memory.
“Threads of Home, Memory and Heritage” is an intimate immersive installation inspired by the atmosphere of a traditional Ukrainian home, created using family heritage objects passed down through generations of women.
Initiated by artist Yaroslava Demutska with the support of Ukraine Appeal and developed in collaboration with members of the local Ukrainian community, the project explores memory, domestic culture and women’s invisible contribution to preserving heritage.
The space combines embroidered rushnyky, pillowcases, handmade textiles, traditional household objects and elements of home decoration, creating the feeling of entering a lived home . At its heart are textile works created by several generations of women, including traditional towels fully woven by hand from hemp - from cultivation to producing the finished cloth.
Each object is accompanied by a text exploring its symbolism and role within daily family life, rituals and traditions. The project reflects on women’s manual labour as an essential yet often unseen form of cultural preservation - work that sustained homes, carried memory and maintained intergenerational connections across time.
The installation is enhanced with music and atmospheric elements that encourage visitors to experience the emotional presence of home, memory and lived heritage.
The exhibition celebrates domestic traditions, women’s craft practices and the ordinary objects that carry cultural identity through generations.
