Milton Keynes Shortlisted for UK City of Culture 2029
We are delighted to celebrate the exciting news that Milton Keynes has been shortlisted for the UK City of Culture 2029, progressing from an initial longlist of nine locations to become one of just four finalists competing for this prestigious national title.
The remaining shortlisted cities are:
Milton Keynes
Sheffield
Blackpool
Wrexham
This is a major achievement for our city and a testament to the creativity, diversity, innovation and community spirit that make Milton Keynes such a unique place to live.
If successful, Milton Keynes would receive £10 million in government funding to deliver a year-long programme of cultural activities and celebrations in 2029. The city has also secured additional funding to further develop its bid ahead of the final decision, which is expected in January 2027.
Proud to Support the Bid
Earlier this year, when Milton Keynes was longlisted, Ukraine Appeal Charity and the Ukrainian Supplementary School "Sunflower" proudly supported the campaign by contributing ideas to the city's bid and sharing our vision for how culture can bring communities together.
The Ukrainian community has become an active part of Milton Keynes' cultural landscape, organising and participating in concerts, exhibitions, educational activities, film screenings, festivals and community events that celebrate both Ukrainian heritage and the rich diversity of our city. Through these initiatives, we continue to build bridges between cultures, strengthen community connections and enrich the cultural life of Milton Keynes.
We are proud that the city's bid has been shaped by thousands of residents, charities, businesses, artists and community organisations through workshops, events and the Book of Ideas. This collaborative approach reflects the very spirit of Milton Keynes: a city built by people from different backgrounds who have come together to create something special.
Looking Ahead
Reaching the final four is a significant milestone, but the journey continues. As the bid enters its next stage, we look forward to bringing forward even more ideas, projects and opportunities that showcase the contribution of Milton Keynes' diverse communities.
The Ukrainian community remains committed to supporting the city's ambition and helping to create a cultural programme that reflects the talents, stories and experiences of all who call Milton Keynes home.
Our City, Our Moment
From a new town founded in 1967 to one of the four finalists for one of the UK's most important cultural honours, Milton Keynes has come a remarkable way.
We congratulate everyone involved in making this achievement possible and wish the Milton Keynes City of Culture bid team every success in the next stage of the competition.
Together, we hope to see Milton Keynes named UK City of Culture 2029 and to continue showcasing the creativity, resilience and diversity that make our city extraordinary.
