Ukraine Appeal and Sunflower Supplementary School Join National HOPE Campaign

Ukraine Appeal charity and the Sunflower Ukrainian Supplementary School are proud to take part in the national “HOPE – Help Other People to Eat” campaign. This initiative is led by the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) and the Association of Ukrainian Women in Great Britain, commemorating the innocent victims of the Holodomor, the man‑made famine of 1932–1933, and standing in solidarity with families who are struggling to put food on the table today — both in the UK and in Ukraine.

The campaign brings together remembrance and action: honouring the past while supporting people facing food insecurity in the present.

Supporting Families in the UK

As part of this effort, our community will be collecting non‑perishable food items and donations to support people in need in the UK. All collected food will be delivered to the local Food Bank.

This gesture recognises the kindness and support shown to Ukraine by the UK since 2022 and allows our community to give something back. Food insecurity remains a serious issue: in 2024–25, nearly 3 million people in the UK relied on foodbanks — including newly arrived Ukrainians. The cost of a weekly shop is now 30% higher than in 2022, placing additional pressure on families.

By contributing to local food support, we help ensure that vulnerable households receive vital support.

Supporting “Bake for Ukraine”: A Mobile Bakery for Frontline Communities

We are also supporting the “Bake for Ukraine” initiative, which is working to repair and equip a mobile bakery that will deliver fresh bread and essential produce to frontline villages and communities in Ukraine. This will be the third mobile bakery operated by Bake for Ukraine.

Bake for Ukraine specialises in baking and delivering high‑quality, nutritious bread to regions that are often overlooked by larger international NGOs and where the security situation is extremely challenging. Many of these areas face regular bombardments, and large parts of the territory previously occupied by Russian forces remain heavily contaminated with landmines. For countless families, the economic situation is dire, and access to basic goods depends on the delivery routes that Bake for Ukraine is able to reach.

The organisation plans to bake 18,000 loaves from its second mobile bakery van from September this year — providing a lifeline of fresh bread to communities with no functioning grocery shops or supply chains.

The third mobile bakery will significantly expand this support, enabling thousands more loaves to be produced and delivered to frontline villages. The cost of making the new bakery fully operational is approximately £10,000. Once repaired, it will travel directly to areas where shops have been destroyed or supply routes cut off, bringing fresh bread — a symbol of dignity, care, and survival — to those who need it most.

Mobile bakeries of the “Bake for Ukraine” deliver fresh bread to devastated frontline communities.

To donate towards the mobile bakery for Ukraine, please use this form. All funds will then be transferred to the organisation running the project.

We will also collect cash donations while gathering food items for the local Food Bank. The date and place will be available later.

Your support — whether through food, funds, or spreading the word — helps us honour the memory of Holodomor victims and stand with families facing hardship today.
